How to Manage The Financial Crisis During COVID-19

As the COVID-19 situation escalates and our opportunity to flatten the curve is now, we have made the decision to temporarily close all BDO Canada offices, effective Wednesday, March 18. All BDO partners and employees will work from home for the foreseeable future. Let us emphasize that we are still open for business and are here to help. Our BDO teams will conduct consultations and sign-ups by phone or online meetings.



The financial concerns Canadians are facing are varied and evolving; so are the resources available to them. We have compiled a list of links to help you stay informed during the financial crisis of COVID-19.


Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan to help individuals who have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis includes:

  • Employment Insurance (EI) Sickness Benefits – one week waiting period to receive benefits has been waived.
  • Canada Emergency Response Benefit:
    • Financial assistance for up to four months for eligible workers who have lost income because of COVID-19.
    • An increase to the monthly Canada Child Benefit in 2020.
    • One-time special payment through the Goods and Services Tax credit for low- and modest-income families.
    • Extension of the filing due date to June 1, 2020 for 2019 individual tax returns. Extension of the due date for income tax balances or instalment payments to August 31, 2020, with no additional interest or penalties.
    • Increase to the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) by an extra $300 per child for 2019-2020. Benefit will be included as part of the scheduled CCB payment in May 2020.
    • One-time Goods and Services Tax credit for low- and modest-income families.
  • Canada Student Loan repayment deferral until September 2020. Check with your provincial or territorial loan provider to find out if repayment assistance is available for the provincial or territorial portion of your loan.


  • Mortgage payment deferral and credit card relief from Canada’s six largest banks. Contact your financial institution to learn more.
  • Many utility companies are offering flexible payment options for their customers. Contact your local provider.
  • Telecommunication companies, including Rogers, TELUS, and Bell are offering payment flexibility to their customers who have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

For documents such as income and expense reports, tax information and other correspondence that must to be sent by email or fax, we offer free scanning apps (i.e. Adobe Scan). We are also accepting pre-authorized debit (PAD) to make payments.

#FactFriday: CERB is extended from 16 weeks to 24 weeks for workers who stopped working due to COVID-19, are eligible for EI Benefits/Sick Benefits or exhausted their EI benefits.

By "Staying at home" you likely have been spending less on dining out, movies, concerts, sporting events, etc. Consider using this money to pay down debts or to create an emergency fund.
